  • Prodigal Son.

I had thought The Following was the nadir of serial killer product.
    I was wrong.

Just played this on the telly via the Xbox. Mrs Monzo wasn’t amused, so headphones on time...

  • Finally started watching The Expanse on Amazon Prime.

This is the scfi/space opera epic I've been waiting to see since the days of Babylon 5 and Battlestar Galactica (2003 edition)

  • It has it's lame moments, but overall Expanse is really good. Definitely looking forward to see what it's like on Amazon....

It was hyped up for me quite a bit and did not live up to it. The characters just did not have any appeal.

    :) Brilliant.

Would love to see a new series of what they’re doing now.

Would love to see a new series of anything at the Peep Show level, although it’s proving to be a long wait.

Currently watching Bojack Horseman, which is a bizarrely-framed drama about alcoholism and emotional problems. It‘s genuinely moved me more than once, which is actually quite lovely.

I'm only on Season 2. I just saw Amazon's ad promoting yet another season.

Too bad Amazon canceled Mozart in the Jungle. Somebody turn Bezos on to classical music!

  • The Irishman and Scorsese interviews. Perfect Saturday afternoon. Been thinking a ton about life, the road, the end. This is perfect for me right now.

Love The Expanse. Looking forward to S4.

Finished Spiral (Engrenages) S7 - Brilliant French cop show. Not the best season though.

Upright (Tim Minchin) Really enjoyed this. Lovely stuff.

you enjoyed the Irishman? Myself and a few co-workers were very excited for it, but the general consensus among us was that it was not very good and kind of a waste of time. Most of us thought it was long and boring, didn't think DeNiro was that great (probably the weakest among the cast). I can't understand the hype, or why some reviews are mentioning Academy Awards for the film. It felt like watching a mediocre Netflix exclusive film. I'd give it a 4.5/10

  • Just watched The Irishman and it was awesome. Great send off for them as a collective.

Waiting for Netflix to drop The Confession Killer tomorrow

I watched it without hype and knew pretty much nothing about it (aside from their past work of course), so I dodged that bullet. Good or bad in a big picture cultural sense (screw awards, that is always BS), I don't really judge it but I liked it in the moment and have thought about it a few times since, so its a win for me personally.

I too am feeling old now and the naval gazey 'what the hell was that (life) for' tone was sad as it seems like an inevitable end to just about everyone. That big old void. Older folks I talk to regardless of level of achievement all seem to end up here. We can never do enough of the truly good stuff or get through without regrets.

The fact that these guys are not 'box office draws' now was a part of the whole narrative / movie experience to me, but that fit the tone. Sad, depressing? yup. Life.

Trying to do another rousing stylized testosterone driven movie would have looked ridiculous. This is the film that they could make, on all levels I think. I love Casino and Goodfellas etc but this was more like a gangster film made by dudes in their 70s.. which it was heh.

Haven't seen Rambo's Last Blood. The last one was way too goofy. That series could have done a wonderful full circle and revisted its roots in some way but yah that wad was shot way long ago.

I wonder what Scorsese thinks of Joker?

I’m definitely waiting for it to drop tomorrow, but I don’t quite understand the point of the project.
Even most people who have just a cursory knowledge of SKs know that Lucas was chattering away only in order just to help various law enforcement agencies clear their books.
Oh, and for those sweet sweet strawberry milkshakes. Can’t forget them!
What new revelations can they possibly be bringing to light?

  • I agree with you here. I think it’s an attempt to make younger generations aware of Ted Bundy, Henry Lee Lucas etc. I’m sure they will keep going with Dahmer etc. However, it could provide some insight on the victim’s families and where they are now with it. Meaning are some of these being reopened or new evidence coming out.

  • I had different expectations going into the movie. I wasn’t expecting Goodfellas type ferocity. I believe Martin did a great job of portraying the “day in the life” of these gangsters. It showed how normal it was for them with mixing in the polarized character of Sheehan’s daughter.

If you go into it expecting Scarface II, you might be let down. I enjoyed it a lot. Great atmosphere, directing & acting.

I think you are absolutely correct about their reasoning. However, I wish they would focus on introducing the “young folks” to some of the lesser known SKs rather than just the standard “heavy hitters”
    Some of my choices:
Dean Corll- an absolute monster of a murderer and manipulator.
Randy Kraft- another monster with an astonishingly high body count.
Paul John Knowles- an interesting mixture of serial killer and spree killer with no discernible victim type. Also, hands down the most photogenic of all SKs. The conclusion of his story is also rather intriguing to say the least.

I read an article with the director a couple weeks ago that makes me love the show even more now. I rarely ever see a TV show that just generally gets my creative juices going. I love how the source is required reading. At least I assume people who have not read the source would be having a totally different relationship with it.

I read it when it came out originally - I was 14-15 I think and some of the writing probably went over my head, and I've pretty much forgotten the bulk of it - so I think people who've never read would still enjoy it too! I read a quick "10 things you should know before watching" article beforehand and that was probably as good as reading the series again.

Yah, for sure that would do it. It plays off of the big things and goes it's own way without getting lost in the fan service weeds.
