Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

Well as a former professional musician (with a major-label back catalog still available!) maybe I'm less dogmatic about what instruments I let pass through my hands. Auxy is the ukulele of apps. Happy to have it; don't always play it.

PS: I don't intrinsically love midi and synths, so maybe that's the crux of our difference?!

Again agreed 100% and exactly the analogy I had in mind. Mandolin though in place of Ukulele. I hate Ukuleles.

What does that have to do with anything? I just have a different opinion about Auxy than you but for some reason you seem to have taken my opinion personally as an attack on you. I apologize if anything I wrote seemed to be attacking you. I was just giving my opinion about an app which from now on I'll be more inclined to keep to myself.

I intensely dislike banjos but I have to play them when the gig requires it (and I'm getting paid for it, for example playing in a pit orchestra for a show) and I still try to play it well. I guess if I was that dogmatic I would refuse to do that because I don't like banjos.

"Dogmatic" came off more harshly than intended; I apologize for that.
And the thing about loving midi and synths — you said that! I was making a joke about my own feeble understanding of midi, and maybe that's why I cotton to such a basic app as Auxy.

I have not taken what you said as an attack on me, honestly.

You're right I did say I liked Midi etc, I didn't pick up on your joke so I didn't get the point you were trying to make. Sorry about that! Text does not communicate subtlety very well at all so I missed that!! Auxy is a very well done app for what it is, it's just not for me.

    It's all good.

    Peace!!

  • For me (me, me) the only metric here is 'what helps you write a good song'. It's nice to talk about the relative quality of the instrument (and if you're primarily an instrumentalist then valid enough), but I judge things only on the end result: Girls like some trousers more than others, despite what I think or the money I paid for the material. I like girls more than trousers etc.

Proper mandolin playing is harder than playing the guitar. I had to play intricate, meandering Eastern European tunes and wild Irish jigs and reels with a number of bands, at breakneck speed. Switching to guitar and then bass was like having a nice nap in comparison.

Yeah I actually also find that up to a 34 scale electric bass, playability is generally easier on larger instruments. After that it starts getting more difficult as specialised fingerings and position shifting are required.

Another aspect is that I specialise in fretless instruments - it’s much easier to approach notes and sound ‘musically’ in tune on a longer scale length.

Mandolins are great for melody writing though! Playing trad tunes in always a blast too. Pull offs!!!

Took me a while to find a cheap one with frets wide enough to get my fat fingers in - most are tiny. I contemplated getting a custom bazouki made at one point but sneaked off to play bass instead.

I really like Octave Mandolas. Bouzoukis are cooler at the minute but the notes and range are identical. Bouzouki necks are quite long so you get a ‘wider’ timbre that blends more, while I find an octave mandala cuts through a bit more for melody stuff and it’s scale length hits a good middle ground for me of spaciousness and access to range under one handspan.

  • Devs once again confirmed that no they won't be doing audiobus and no midi out for the time being. I appreciate the commitment to the vision

A well-ish known folkie used to do a few gigs with my ex and practice at my house, and he had a lovely hand made bazouki, I think that’s where I got the idea - plus a local instrument maker was building them at a pretty reasonable price. I did think about the Mandolas, but struggled to find one in my price range locally. I still want that bloody bazouki...

Time for my Peter Buck wisecrack:
I have never cared for Buck's guitarplaying. When Losing My Religion hit, I declared that apparently the rest of the world agreed with me, and also did not want to hear him play the guitar.

Buck is a genuinely nice guy, but I still have not relayed that "witticism" to him during those times I have met him.

    Haha.
But just think how horrible it would have been on ukulele? Or "The Battle of Evermore"!
It's really weird that the ukulele has become the soundtrack for commercials that are trying to evoke Zooey Deschanel winsomeness....

I tend to prefer musical tools that allow me to realize my musical ideas rather than force me to fit my ideas into what the app can do and (for me) that's exactly what Auxy is (despite it's very nice piano roll and overall design).

Wow this community seems awesome!! @yowza that describes what I was looking for and OMG I didn't even know it! If I may ask, what apps/tools fall under this for you: musical tools that allow me to realize my musical ideas rather than force me to fit my ideas into what the app can do

I'm new to making music — I've always wanted to try — and I thought Auxy was the answer, but I feel limited by the genres that it seems to cater to (again, I was unaware of how EDM-centric a lot of the audience was that other people picked up on) and a bit by the scenes aspect of its design.

(coming over here from the auxy forum...)

Anyway, I think I'll take a closer look around here regardless, and see if I can find out elsewhere in this community too  seems so awesome, you all're very kind. I'd actually want to hang out here.

  • @t1_tracey welcome. And yes, awesome is us. Largely. What is even awesomer is the vast amount of awesome that those past and present have noodled through here, so do have a dig about. Search function is a bit limited, but applying some modifiers in Google will likely get you where want to go if'n you get stuck.

For all the awesomeness, if I had to make one suggestion (or word of warning) it might be: RUN AWAY for this way lies appaholia and there's still time to retreat back into your room with Auxy....should you choose to dive in, the goods news is that the water, while a little penniless, is quite lovely.

  • Update has landed.
    Auxy Studio by Auxy

  • Auxy just went subscription. Not sure if I should be pissed because of the soundpacks I bought, and what I'll be losing if I don't "go premimum."

  • Seems a pretty steep subscription to me so give it a miss.

You don’t lose anything. The subscription is only for access to their new drum/fx sample library with over 3000 sounds that will be updated monthly. Also you get a free trial if you bought any sound packs. I had them all so my trial is 2 months. I’ll probably rip them for use elsewhere. But you don’t lose sounds or access to the app. And the new basic app features are free

Sounds reasonable. Hard to delve in at work. Thanks for the investigation.

  • @ExAsperis99 yeah I had the same initial reaction. But it’s actually pretty reasonable. It’s a subscription for a new service within the app basically, not the basic app functions itself
