Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Download on the App Store

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

iPad Music help needed

Hello everyone.

I'm terribly sorry if this isn't the right platform for my questions, but I'm currently looking for a forum to write about making music on iPad.

Since I'm just too stupid, to get any DAW to work properly on my computer I startet to really like the "plug and play" features of my iPad Air with GarageBand and I would like to go deeper with that. However I just have no clue how. I have an iRig 2, so that I can connect my Guitar to the iPad but... is there any way to get more instruments on the iPad? Like, for example with a midi-Keyboard simulating a trumpet or something similar?

PS: Sorry for my bad english. Greetings from Germany, though.

  • i guess I'll take... the red one?

  • You mean more instruments than those included in Garageband? Sampletank has a nice variety of instruments which can be used with midi

There are also more specialised apps focusing on a single or a few instruments. I'm mainly a synth guy so i can't really help you there regarding the quality of the sounds but i'm sure someone will be a long with some sage advice :)

Also, Thumbjam is an excellent app which not only has lots of good quality instruments included but also an expressive playing surface with an arpeggiator, scales etc. It's really good in my opinion

    I'll check those, thank you.

The problem is, that I am just not used to digital instruments, synthesizers, etc. and garageband always seemed more or less understandable and intuitional to me.

I DO know, by the way, that a MIDI-Keyboard is more or less an on-off-switch, however I am not sure which one is compatible, which apps are compatible to garageband and so on.

But thank you very much for your responses!

Yea, there is certainly a learning curve with this

So there are multiple ways to use other apps with your DAW, Garageband in this case. Since it seems like you're looking for ways to play various instruments with your midi keyboard and record the output, i'd say you should start with Audiobus

It connects your apps so you would open Audiobus, set your instrument app as input in Audiobus and Garageband as output. It will look like this

This will also create an audio track in Garageband. So once you've configured your instrument app to talk to your keyboard you can now press record in Garageband and start playing your keyboard and the resulting audio will be recorded in Garageband

Another option is to make a track in Garageband using one of the built in instruments and then record the midi output of your keyboard as midi notes. That will enable you edit it afterwards and try it with various different instruments etc.

    Lots of options

    Your English is excellent! :)

You can connect a MIDI keyboard using the 'Lightning to USB camera adapter' that you can buy, as long as your keyboard supports USB. Then you can use it in GarageBand for any of the virtual instruments.

GarageBand seems to be able to do something similar itself, I think.

Thank you very much. I don't have many chances to use my english, that's why I'm feeling a little insecure.

I just saw, that there is a iRig-Midi-Device, but this USB to camera seems to be way cheaper. I think I have a MIDI to USB cable somewhere... would I be able to use my Yamaha P155 Stage Piano with that? And play, for example, the strings from GarageBand? And will there be a Delay?

Yup, i totally misunderstood what you wanted and you're right, if you connect a midi keyboard you can play all the various instruments in Garageband with it. No need for other apps :)

  • Seems like the perfect use case for the Korg plugKEY.

    -- Midi in.
    -- Headphone out.
    -- Speaker out.
    -- iPad charging.
