Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

inter-device audio mac osx sierra

Ok, I don't know if anybody encountered this before but this worked perfectly for me in el capitan. Now in sierra, not really. So when I plug either my iphone or ipad. (both the latest ios 10.3.1) They show up has a device in audio midi setup asking me to enable them. So when I do, it starts the spinning thing and then disappears. It's not even showing up has an audio device. Anybody have a suggestion? trashing audio prefs if it's possible? I don't know what to do and I'm certainly not reinstalling the os from scratch.

Thanks in advance.

  • This has happened to me, too, when connected via a hub. When everything was restarted and connected directly (iPad to Mac), it worked again (later also again via a hub in a more complicated setup). If that doesn't help, you could also try another USB port, they sometimes act up.
Good luck, hope it helps, t

  • I've had this problem, but oddly only on my Mac Pro, not my Macbook Pro. Same os and everything... The only thing that seems to work is a reboot of the iPad, and I need to do that each time I connect.

  • ok both devices were connected on the macbook pro directly. I did reboot both devices but don't remember if they were still connected via usb. I'm gonna try combos and see. I'm glad this seems to be a known prob. this means it should be fixed. thanks for the replies.

  • I think this is because you're technically supposed to manually disconnect (dis-enable) the iPad in AMS. I think what happens when you don't disconnect - maybe take the device elsehwere or join a different network, it screws with the "last known location." Sometimes I can re-enable by quittimg AMS, then on iPad going to Settings-->General--Reset-->Reset Location & Privacy. However, while a bit quicker than the hard reset, then you get all the location apps/services requesting access again.

I wish they could make it so the Mac would recognize the disconnection, but I'm guessing it can't work this way because USB Hosts can only respond to requests from their hosted devices, not the other way round.

  • Nothing works. This sucks. It worked perfectly in El Capitan before. People that say windows is more problems in general are totally wrong.

  • True, and it also doesnt offer IDAM, so one less problem to worry about :D Have you checked different cables? As for me, worst thing that Inter Device Audio Mode required is reboot of the ipad, that always did it. Normally a swift replug of the Lightning cable is enough...

Hi thanks. No with different cables, it's the same. The thing is that it shows up in AMS but after enabling, it disappears and that's it. I've tried to reboot everything, hard reset. Same thing. I'm very disappointed with Apple. Everytime there's an OS update, they break stuff all the time. The engineering department is to laught at.

Have you checked your console log? As soon as i connect my iPad, i get following line: HALS_Device.cpp:110:Activate: HALS_Device::Activate: activating device 828: AppleUSBAudioEngine:Apple Inc.:iPad:4e366eecc285dbb6051ea90c657ef8c8f5783efd:3

You should paste your console Log after you try to activate the mode, so we can go through it...a clue must be in there somewhere..

  • Hmmm... any chance you have quicktime running? Both devices connected to same network? Maybe try turn wifi off/on... Check and refresh your Location on the Mac (System Preferences-->Network) but yeah, hard restart of ipad and regular restart of the mac should do the trick.

  • do you mean the system log in the console?

  • edited April 2017

Just the device log should be enough, from the moment when you activate IDAM and it doesn't work

  • The log is too big but one thing funny I noticed. The ipad appears as an unknown device in the console.

  • Thats not good xD You can select the items after connecting with shift button, and share them in a way that is convenient for you...

  • Ok now it appears with the right name.I mean this is all too funny. The macbook pro is not even a year old. I've never messed with the system. I don't go to funny sites. There are no warez in there and yet it doesn't function properly.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

It's just technology mate. I run a hackintosh, not even a mac, almost 5 years old, overclocked to the gills, and Inter Device Audio works perfectly. :D Could you paste the log? Just shift click select the lines, copy, and paste on here

  • No it's ok. I don't even know what to paste you anyway and I'm starting to get fed up of this.

Thanks a lot for trying to help out.

  • The only I noticed in the system log when I tried to enable in AMS is this:

    Apr 17 18:18:53 Patricks-MacBook-Pro com.apple.usbmuxd[98]: critical StartReads:308: Attempt to free buffer 0x7fa466033000 that's still out for reading, allocated StartReads:256

  • Maybe kill itunes?

  • i don't have a single entry in my log for usbmuxd

  • I did and it seems to display somewhat the same with ituneshelper blabla

  • here is a fun test: create a new user in your os x and then try it again :O

  • I've tried the guest account and in AMS, I see the ipad and it says enable. When I enable it, it disappears. The same with my account. I've loaded ableton and no such device in the input for core audio.

  • try midimttr app with the midi LE mac app..it bypasses the audio midi setup/acts as it's own audio midi route. This works for me. Also disable the setting where the mac Photo app opens every time you plug your iphone in if you have that set up. This seemed to cause problems with my audio midi setup till i turned it off.

  • If it doesn't appear in the AMS, it won't show in ableton ofc. Entering IDAM mode kills the itunes sync/mux etc so that should be ok.

There MUST be additional stuff in your logs. Filter your device log with "coreaudiod" and paste all of it please.

  • How exactly do you activate IDAM and what is it anyway. Inter-device audio what? I see no message anywhere about coreaudio in the device log.

  • Inter Device Audio Mode, so that means it fails before it is reaching the coreaudiod...makes sense actually. For shits and giggles: You running any 3rd party firewall?

  • No not at all. It's funny all my audiocard work perfectly. Just tested all of them. Must be a known problem in sierra.

  • edited April 2017

I'm sure they do, since this doesn't seem to have anything to do with CoreAudio. The IDAM activation goes south before the virtual audio device is ever activated. I'm certain there are further clues in the logs...

    Studiomux is an alternative too.

    Good luck

  • Yeah I do have studiomux and music io but it is just so easy with IDA. plug and play but in my case, it's plug and pray. Thanks a lot for all your help. Maybe another OS updates will fix that in the future.
