Dear esteemed fellow iOS music app lovers and talented musicians,

I am not a musician, but I love playing with music apps. This is my first project that I tried to make into a full song. Please consider that when you listen to it. Your criticism will be much appreciated.

    Regards,
    Hennie

A warm welcome to the Club @Hennie. You have come to the right place, being a non musician with app addiction issues. ;) Enjoy your musical journey. You are amongst friends and one can learn a lot down here. Have fun. :)

  • @studs1966: like the funky waah waah sounds kicking in around 0.45. Production spot on, vox sitting nicely in mix. As a non-synth guy, can’t say much more than well done!

@aaronpc: catchy melody, really reminded me of the stuff on the radio in the mid 1980’s. I liked the vocal melody but had a bit of a hard time understanding the lyrics. I just had a read of the back story and lyrics…really cool premise for a tune, and reckon it will be a long-remembered feature of the wedding ceremony for folks in attendance. Nice melancholy-sounding instrumental breakdown from just prior to 3 min mark to fade out.

@trackedout: Love the understated lo-fi vocal over the menacing instrumental. Nice big phat bass line too.

@DerekBuddemeyer: stark, momentous feel to this tune. The drums kicking in over piano really stops you in your tracks as a listener, a la “something important is happening”. Nice job.

@BluePunk: song intro really grabs you with the stereo drumming and the percussive guitar stabs. Really like your style of vocals, what with all your various vocal selves chipping in from diff parts of the stereo field. Your vocal tone really suits your music too – reckon I’d recognise one of your tunes within the first 3 or 4 words uttered. The bass kicking up in tempo around 0.50 really kicks it along, some really cool guitar histrionics around 2:20 too. Great somewhat slower tempo tune (compared with your recent offerings). Really interesting motif for the narrative too, great job.

@technemedia: This one is really well glued together… lots going on in the tune (like last month), but everything has its place without it seeming overwhelming or cluttered. The instrumentals in the left and right channels go together really well, and voice is really strong down the middle too. Great job on solo around 1:50, nice job all round.

@Hennie: well done on putting your first tune together and opening yourself to feedback from other folks. It’s a daunting proposition trying to put one’s first tune together. You’ve done a great job on the production, everything sounds really clear. Being a non-synth guy I probably can’t say too much more about the sounds, but maybe a tempo shift here and there to mix it up a bit? Great first effort.

    This month’s tune from me:

In terms of the narrative, this one relates a political debate going in in my country about access to marriage in our community. There’s a few politicians with 1950’ values on certain issues that I feel are out of date, so I’ve tried to have a prod in a fun and respectful way. In terms of the music, I was aiming for a funky, bombastic vibe. Also been reading up on freq masking, so tried to carve out some sonic space for each instrument. Re some of last month’s conversations, I tried ‘singing’ but could only really get that working for background vocals in the 1st half , and in an understated way for the main vocal in the 2nd half. Anyway, hope you like it.

A little ditty on the subject of regret for your listening (hopefully pleasure).

Liked this, reminds me a bit of Gong. Although that could just be your voice sounds a bit like Daevid Allen's (to me at least)...

  • Mucking about with iVCS3, Addictive Synth and Reslice live through Moebius into AUM. I know, silly noises and not very musical but it keeps me off the streets:

  • @trackedout deliciously chaotic performance, which takes a fairly standard rock riff and a catchy vocal melody and twists it into something strange and cool sounding. Vocal delivery and non-title all add to the feel. I love this. Top marks for the melody though, it's great.

  • @Bluepunk you should really see a specialist about that Tourette's, it must make Formal Occasions/Family Gatherings/Yearly Reviews quite difficult for you.

Anyway I love this, as mad and shambolic and funny as it is. It's also a distinct evolution, and more original than your proto-punk roots, more compelling to listen to as a result. Something fresh. It's been a pleasure to watch you grow and find a voice of your own.

I also love how the SOTMC has collected so many individuals, and I think this entry sums that up perfectly: it sounds like you, and no-one else. All the regular contributors have their own sound and preferred genres, but each also has a distinct voice trying to come out. Taken as a group it sounds all over the place, but that's what makes it fun - irrepressible individuality.

  • @technemedia You've posted that one before! I reviewed it the first time around :) At least it proves we're paying attention.

  • @Hennie welcome to the club. :)

My main criticism of your piece is that the main musical theme isn't really interesting enough to hold the listener's attention for 5 + minutes - but there is some really great stuff going on in the secondary themes.

The main riff though is too static both rhythmically and melodically - it sounds sequenced and drawn on a piano roll rather than the kind of melody that arises organically from playing, so the meter is too regular (1 and 2 and 3 and 4) and the walking up and down the scale isn't inventive enough to give the riff such prominence.

The secondary sounds are much better and more interesting though, especially the theremin-type sounds, which are much more enjoyable to listen to. I think you could take those sounds and create a much more compelling song if you anchored them with a more groovy and interesting bass line.

  • @Hennie I like this. 70s scifi soundtrack with Donald Sutherland searching through empty office buildings. I normally want a song to branch out in a new direction at some point, but you placed a new morsel in the mix just often enough that I ended up appreciating the doggedness of it all. You obviously have a good ear, in which case musicianship can take a back seat.

Not my sack of cheetos, but still a fine circa 1968/1973 sound (or sentiment). You've got the swirl happening very well here...

  • @marliess Like how you make a lot of noise while leaving plenty of space in there as well. Love the theology/biology scan as well. While the vocal sound is good I did find myself wanting the voice to break out a little more. Not so much in anger, but, I dunno, fierceness or something like it, maybe you'll do that live :)

  • @richardyot sorry about that, I couldn't remember if I had but at least it's a better version...not that anyone would notice ;-) I'll try to be more careful next month as I have a new one.

Wow Monzo, I'm liking your mad sounds. Really cool effects I wouldn't hesitate running into Samplr to see what happenes. It conjured up a young man with a long beard and predictable thick glasses and a white coat cooking up Miskito robots just to see sparks and lava flying onto the walls painting impossirainbows and more. Thanks

  • Celebrating the release of Auria Pro 2.09, I spent this evening making this song (it's 2:30 AM in Rio as I type this). The percussion you listen is me, taping in my wooden desk, and also shaking a capped plastic cup with some coarse salt inside (as you'll see in the video I made, and will release in a few days, when I finish cutting and editing everything in LumaFusion).

Enjoy, and have a great week!

    Dimitri.

Hey @JohnnyGoodyear thanks for having listen. The voice remains the weakest link for me but happy to be challenging it a bit more each month. I like the idea of injecting some fierceness - just finished the instrumental for next months tune at 160bpm, and will try to bring a bit of vocal growl to that one. Incidentally, i told my wife this week that my current working album title is 'Down for Growl'. Sadly she vetoed it but at least shes taking an interest :)

Thanks matey - change the above to 'old man' and that's me to a tee!

Addictive Pro + Reslice + rhythm app + a noise maker (such as iVCS3) + fx X AUM = maximum fun.

  • @studs1966: really nice bass groove. Played or is it a loop? Very club-friendly, I really enjoyed this.

@aaronpc, very nice usage of synthetic vocals - at first I thought it was your own voice through some kind of vocoder effect! Nice lyrics, and nice symphonic pads!

@trackedout, nice vocals in this one. The strings panned left were a nice touch. Enjoyed the drums' groove and sound as well. Is it finished? It ends rather suddenly.

@DerekBuddemeyer, nice little clip. The piano is gorgeous!

@Bluepunk, when I read in your post that you struggle with love songs, I expected your song for this month would be a sappy, mellow love ballad. I was wrong: it was a quite hard shuffle, which reminds me of Queens Of Stone Age at times. Very well done, both the song and the way you surprised me.

@technemedia, very nice song, a little reminescent of 90's lighter alternative rock (Blind Mellow, Toad The Wet Sprocket). The intro is simply great, and the moog-ish noise at the second chorus was well employed. The arrangement is effective and the mix is great. Well done!

@Hennie, welcome to the SOTMC. Nice synth riffs, and I also enjoyed the choice of timbres. I was expecting some kind of percussive sound to establish a groove, but the song is cool as is. Keep them coming!

  • @marliess, another well-acomplished production. I like the way you always employ dynamics in your grooves, smartly placing the breakdowns between the song's sections. The guitar work is really great. Again, it's ready for commercial release. Congrats!

  • @MonzoPro: great introduction. It really fits the song's name. The transition to the main groove was done effectivelly. Impressive what you acomplished with your "noises". I find it very musical indeed. Congrats!

  • My only soundcloud upload so far...
Made with Gadget, except for the guitar solo which was recorded in cubase then chopped up for Bilbao.

Thanks @theconnactic. Most of my stuff is played into a loop(easiest way).

@JDubbel Really like this groove/thing, got a cool roll-along feel to it....just need ten girls singing in the background (think the end of 'In Memory of a Free Festival' with extra summer haze). One note might be that I found the overall thing a bit trebly (technical term), but that could just be my tinfoil ears...

Bless you! It's all pot-luck with my iOS stuff as it's banged in live, but AUM is a great mixer, and good for bringing in the rhythmic elements

thank you, yeah you could be right about the treble, I did use a fair bit of EQ and I think I do sometimes push the top and high mids and then the low mids suffer...
I did deliberately eq the strings like that though to try and get a sort of sweeping exotic strings sound

I do like it, but starting at the 38 second mark it sounds like you over-attenuated the second oscillator's filter frequency into the envelope signal... I don't know what I'm talking about.

Do please go outside. Buy an ice cream truck. Turn it up to infinity.

Damn - I was hoping no-one would spot that!

  • All feedback greatly appreciated. Great community with good ears!

A bit of Soulful House. Enjoy. Vocal Acapella is from LoopMasters.

This is a tough one. I LOVE the track so much. That cool Motown bass tone, I'm such a sucker for Rhodes too and the whole groove is jazzy but with punch.

I don't like the vocal samples though. And that's just not on you brother that's just in general. They stick out because the phrasing isn't made exactly for the track their being dropped in. Also if there's only a few select bits that work melodically with a chord progression there's going to be repetitive sections out of necessity.

I'm not even sure if finding vox samples FIRST and then writing a track around those would change the sound. But I respect you for making it work so well here, there are certain hooks that work with the track.

The track, rhythm section and chord progression is so cool I'd dig hearing just an instrumental solo over it. Jazz guitar, a sax or something spikey like marimba, etc. Just my opinion, overall though the mix, recording & sounds were great. The bass sat perfectly in the pocket.

Thanks Dimitri, especially the guitar comments. Would love to be able to play like you can, so really appreciate the feedback! Been really happy with tonestack for cleans / amplitube mesa for dirt lately (the cab room feature is sweet for slotting it in the mix).

Thanks mate. As I can't sing, it's very difficult to add vocals, so I ve gone a down a different venue(Acapellas). I don't want to use Defectected Acapella as its more of a remix then. Unfortunately, living in Cyprus, the chance of getting someone to volunteer to sing is difficult.......... Not unless you don't mind Greek songs, a bouzouki & a bottle of Zavonia. Lol. ;)
