Audiobus: Use your music apps together.
What is Audiobus? — Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.
Download on the App StoreAudiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.
OT: Playing Santa for a 15-YO Rapper
So there's a member of my household who writes rhymes. He has requested a microphone for Christmas. I tried to explain to him why a microphone by itself wouldn't work and suggested some kind of beatbox.... He's not interested, he said, in making the beats himself. I think he just wants to record himself rapping.
I guess I could set him up with a decent mic and let him record into Garageband in the family Mac...
But is there any kind of portable standalone unit? Ideally some kind of MPC/hybrid that would let him make rudimentary beats and record a vocal track?

Does it have Link?
Hahahah.
If you can find a used Zoom HD16 that would be a pretty good fit. There's also the newer Zoom R8, but the drum machine is a little harder to use.

2 cents: if he wants a mic and you're up for it, just get him a mic. Perhaps he'll tire of garageband loops or downloaded instrumentals and then seek advice on making beats. Until then... some MCs are just MCs. Nothing wrong with that!
Show him this, and he'll want a loopstation to go with his mic
OK, going with the microphone. He can plug into Garageband for the time being.
Now I have to choose the mic. This seems pretty decent. Samson condenser mic. Not my first-choice brand, but it gets good reviews. (There's a newer version that seems to be the same thing but it has a headphone jack ON the mic? That seems pointless.) Anyone have experience with it?
Headphone jack on the mic might be good for iphone 7?
