Audiobus: Use your music apps together.
What is Audiobus? — Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.
Download on the App StoreAudiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.
Using Ableton Link away from home
I'm working on a live performance that involves using Ableton Link sync up my iPhone and MacBook. Right now they can connect to each other by both being connected to my home Internet. But what happens when I perform at a venue that doesn't have a Wi-Fi connection that both my devices can connect to? I assume I can do it by creating a network on my MacBook, right? I see the "create network" option, but when I select it, it doesn't ask me to create a password. I don't want anyone nearby to be able to connect to my MacBook. I'm guessing I'm probably missing a step or something.

Another option is a travel router like the Hootoo TripMate Elite or similar. Battery powered and can even charge your iPad.
Sorry I can't help with Mac ad-hoc wireless. I could tell you how to do it easily on a Windows PC. But we all know how much easier those are to use.
Here is a link how to set up Mac Ac-Hoc
