Song of the Month Club - April 2016

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, is often the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. Instrumentals are very welcome, and songs with vocals are especially encouraged, so if you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

This is a little remix I made in a few days last month for Novation's Remix this competition. A lots of errors but the deadline was there so here it is

Wonderful. Despite being almost 8 minutes it managed to keep my attention high. For my personal tastes is just missing some low end in the sub area so it could be even more catchy.

Not sure I was going for catchy but thanks mschenkel.it lo ! It was all captured live using aum , so I might edit it down and add some bass notes on there as you suggested . Like yours too , be nice to know what you used on the track :)) Like your other tracks too , ' Bend the Bender ' is excellent and reminds me a bit of Mouse on Mars

  • It was a remix competition to be done in Launchpad with a set of given loops.
The drums were made with SeekBeats, then I recorded As different loops kick, top and percs with a little eq and dynamics optimization in aum(same chain applied to different loops). The "E bass/plucked sound" is from the remix sample pack with some HPF and then sliced. The sub was a pretty simple patch out of FF One in Auria the processed with Kuvert for the "side chain compression" effect, like I did on the "windy" pad. The saw arpeggio was one of the loops provided with a tripleted gate and then I made a pushed version in some delay effect(can't remember if it was a ApeSoft or FieldScaper) As far as I can remember that was all in regards of edited stuff, then it was performed live on Launchpad Launching some other Novation's loops as the drum loop at the beginning.

Thanks for the kind words for bend the bender.
Bend the bender was the result of a non competitive contest for speed production: 2HoursTrackSunday. It was a lot of fun. Unfortunately soon after that my PC fried and I was out of the game. And it seems out of business. It would be fun to re-act it in here tho.

Thanks for the info :)) I havent got the Launchpad IAP so cant load my own samples , but maybe I should get that one , seems like a good way to build tracks . I bought Skram today , that would be useful for generating loops which I could them import into LP . I use Kuvert too , useful for making rhythms

  • Hello, my friends!

"Mocó" is the name of a large rodent that grows in dry places, such as the Caatinga of the northeastern Brazil, where it's sometimes hunted for food.

I started the song in Garageband, using mostly its built-in synths, and an old toy cithara for the first presentation of the main theme. Then I moved all audio to Auria, recorded bass and guitars, mixed amd mastered.

    Dimitri.

  • howdy folks,

heres some music for gin and chickens.
firo, ispark, gadget and aum the main culprits on this trip.

    cheers, badrico

  • Busy on here already this month,

This one started life as a rock instrumental I did at the back end of last year. We've chopped it up, mixed in some loops from Blockswave, added a few more synths and some vocals. Not really folky this month, more ambient , trance, metal(ish).

  • edited April 2016

@carol wow, really love the ambiance, very nicely done, great track ! The hit of this month for me ! :)

@mschenkel.it well, I like some of the loops, and it sounds clean, just would have liked something more structured. Maybe rework it more as a final track to have a better view ?

@theconnactic I like this track more than your previous one. The tempo, the mix, and musicality is there, also the theme is good.

@badrico not crazy about the brass sounds, also the layers of kiks are a bit weird. Not too much developpement of the structure nor the theme, the break at 2:36 is nice !

@orchardman I like what you've made with the voice, sounds etheral like a synth. I also like the folk guitar part, the mix is clean. Maybe the rock battery should evolve more ? I would have use more electronic beats in fact.

  • My first attempt at reggae. Ive tried to keep it simple. Its not quite finished but I need a push to do more. Gadget with dublin, marseille, bilbao (cheated with the vocals :* ). What do I need to do to finish it?

  • @carol Welcome, have fun. A very atmospheric piece. Broody, sometimes even dipping into a nervy feel which adds vulnerability & space. I liked where you turned it darker at 1.30 with some delicious textures to add a tinge of menace to proceedings.

7.47 long. That's a Jumbo Jet effort you've put in there. Prefer an Airbus 3.40 myself but you did keep my interest up. Maybe it could drop back a tad so as not to overshoot the runway.

  • @carol liked all the sounds and they all fitted together. I liked it it reminded me of Can and Brian Eno.

@mschenkel.it There is a lead sound that was a little too prominent for three minutes. I liked the break at 4, this felt right, like an aiming point for the song. The last 30 s I thought was good and could be exploited more.

@theconnactic really liked this, Im an ozric fan and this had all the elements I like in space rock. Very professional sound.

@badrico each of the instruments were played well. Are you a pianist? To me it felt like each of the instruments was the lead. To many driving instruments and not enough support. I think you have enough material for an album there.

@orchardman my favorite. Couldnt fault this(but if I went out on a limb I would have said the guitar solo could have been fattened/thickened) A very professional sound way past my ability to give advice

Thank you both! I cannot review any songs right now, but I'll do it very soon.

    Dimitri.

  • Thanks for the feedback,

    • yup them kiks are kooky, sure enuf, and like the ' brass ', Laboratory hybrids.

And nope, hardly a piano player, sigh, but currently plenty fascinated. I shall certainly ponder the point about all them leads, hadn't considered that I could stumble into such territory.

    Cheers, rico

    Thanks , I'll take that lol !

  • @carol a nice soundscape with some great textures but ultimately for me I kept waiting for just a hint more melody. Something eastern on that violin that was there in the background. Or it may just be that I'm being old fashioned.

  • @mschenkel.it Its great to see someone actually produce a full track using the Novation Launchpad app. I've had it for ages and never produced anything worthwhile with it. Musically not my sort of thing so I'm not really qualified to comment.

  • @theconnactic I wasn't sure about this one at the start but from when the Jazz rock guitars come in I really liked it. Excellently played and produced. I would love to here you play something more rock orientated.

  • @badrico nice vibe to this one. I particularly liked when the brass and the organ sound mix at the end maybe you could have used this a bit earlier in the track.

  • @Richtowns you can't beat a bit of reggae. Now just add some nice off-beat reggae guitars on top.

  • @carol said:

    Wonderful !
What a dream portal. So many textures and flavours rushing thru. Chilly, wild, raw, delicate, mad and tender all at once.
The way the instruments come slowing more into focus as it nears conclusion is so compelling. As though they are materializing out of the very atmosphere they conjured.

    Splendido .

That is some quirky dub, like somebody soaked the Ganja in helium. Jolly sounds and happy riddem... To finish ...perhaps play it for some party people in a bouncy castle , record the results.
    Cheers, badrico

Hey I think the Moco be very pleased to star in a film with this as the soundtrack. I could imagine the Moco having a very swank penthouse apartment and many glamorous and somewhat decadent associates enjoying warm breezes on the terrace while " Moco " plays in the background. I especially enjoy the the kind of swirly scifi thing that wiggles out of parts of the guitar solo. Oh a the flute is delightful - and would perfect for when the dude moco makes prolonged eye contact with the mysterious gypsy moco.

    Cheers, b

  • @orchardman

Very silky seductive. A pleasure to absorb. The dark drone in there is such a presence. For my personal tastes a tad of unruly chaos is a welcome addition to any sacrifice .

    Cheers,b

  • @mschenkel.it
Lots of fun here. For me the middle has the juice, where the percussive dances with the spunky little melodic emblems .

    cheers, b

  • @mschenkel.it Fair play to you sir. All completed in a couple of hours! Some task. Nice dark intro helped with those jagged notes cutting through. Cool drum rhythm both in the intro & particulary when the bass drum kicks the door in. It raises the feeling in the guts. The middle section is the high for me & got my sluggish dance juices to WakeTF up.
Don't forget to change the washer on that leaking tap that starts dripping at 1.40. Costly if you're on a meter!

  • @theconnactic Large rodent! Just the thought sends shivers deep down inside...yuksville!
Just glad your track was light & airy & didn't have any tail swishing noises! Another well played, mixed piece (as always). Of course, the section 1.00 to 1.45 set the ears to nasty sound alert. Great playing there Dimitri, keeping tight to the differently timed accents. Very cool & tricky I'd imagine. The ride cymbal sounds wonderful & can really hear the crisp attack follow by a lovely wash at 1.20.
Do you have any plans to sing on your tunes? Think it could push your stuff even higher up the ladder. Please.....just don't let those Moco things out of the country.
Large Rodent!!!......I'm off to set the bear traps just in case!
