Audiobus: Use your music apps together.

What is Audiobus?Audiobus is an award-winning music app for iPhone and iPad which lets you use your other music apps together. Chain effects on your favourite synth, run the output of apps or Audio Units into an app like GarageBand or Loopy, or select a different audio interface output for each app. Route MIDI between apps — drive a synth from a MIDI sequencer, or add an arpeggiator to your MIDI keyboard — or sync with your external MIDI gear. And control your entire setup from a MIDI controller.

Audiobus is the app that makes the rest of your setup better.

  • Importing the freeze file is a nice trick. I hadn’t realized they were there.

Any tips about inserting bank/program changes?

    No, sorry.

  • FYI for Auriaers. There was a glitch reported before that Auria would open two audio tracks when a new app was connected through Audiobus, that has been fixed now with the 2.20 update. All smooth now.

  • It it possible to make Auria midi work with input AUs? I am trying to use Xequence’s very nice Pads plug in and can’t make it talk to my sampler on the same track. The same with AudioVeek plugs.

Btw, RIM (Auria developer) said over on the Auria forum that he has significantly reworked MIDI handling and expects to release a new version soon (perhaps even this coming week).

  • I could swear that I made it work, but using two tracks rather than one. I can’t replicate it now though.

Happy Days finally Auria Pro gets AU midi support. Showing Fugue Machine AU controlling stock Instrument.

@Alexandernaut I can’t close the window down for Fugue Machine AU once open in Auria Pro? Regular version not beta of FM any ideas Auria Pro bug ? Tried Photon AU andtnat was fine.

  • Are you also able to record FM's MIDI?

  • I can get AU midi to trigger internal instruments, but not AU Instrument apps. Wtf?
    I must be missing something...

I can record the midi from Rozeta XOX. In fact, that’s the only way I’ve found so far to play AU apps from AU midi plugins. Still stumbling around thinking it has to be user error?!

[edit] ugh. AU midi record timing seems to be off as well. It misses the first beat, and the rest hit slightly before the beat.

    I’m not doing this. 😕
I’m worn out learning all the weird stuff that happens with AU midi in Auria. It’s gone on for too long. Maybe I’ll check back here later and find it is just something I’ve overlooked. I hope so. But I don’t have the stomach for it right now.

@wim I managed to send AU midi to AU plugins in the following ways:

    • Receiving AU in instrument slot, midi sending AU in effects slot on same track
    • Receiving AU in instrument slot, midi sending AU on other track in instrument slot
    • Receiving AU in instrument slot, midi sending AU on other track in effects slot

For all settings, i needed to setup the midi routing on the track containing the sender to receive its input from the midi AU and ouput to the receiving AU.

Setup that way, the track containg the sender also records the midi. If only the track containing the receiving AU had setup its input/output nothing was recorded if the midi came from a different track.

    .

I checked with the following midi AU senders: Autony, Riffer, Physicles, KB1, Xequence Keys+Pads, Fugue Maschine, Cells, Bassline, X0X, Particles

    .

I am still trying around with AU midi chains, but didn‘ t it working yet.

  • Just tried Rozeta XOX and my CPU jumped to 115% !

  • @wim And you were right about the AU midi timing offsets, the first hit is not recorded and all notes are a bit off the grid :(

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.

I did some testing and helped to find a few bugs with AU MIDI apps, specifically Xequence Keys and Audeonic MFX. These were fixed. However I don't use any of the Rozetta suite or in fact hardly any MIDI generating AUs so I couldn't help more than that.

Best thing to do is to report bugs on the Auria forums. The reality is that MIDI AU is completely undocumented by Apple, so devs are working in the dark.

I’m stumped. I have been trying to get Rozeta X0X to play Ruismaker and just can’t find a way to do it. From what I’ve read, what should work is:

    • Add a midi track with Ruismaker (AU) as the instrument.
    • Remove the default “Bypass” setting on Ruismaker (Why is this the default??) and verify that it makes sound and responds to midi notes from the keyboard.
    • Add Rozeta XOX in an FX slot on the track and set up some notes to play
    • Set the midi input for the track to Rozeta
    • Set the midi output for the track to Ruismaker
    • Arm the track
    • Press play, verify that Rozeta is running.

However, I hear nothing. Next I press record, then play. Notes are recorded to a clip. Now if I press play, the recorded notes play. There are timing problems with the notes, but I do hear output from Ruismaker.

If I repeat the above steps with an internal instrument rather than Ruismaker, I can hear playback without recording the notes. Some AUs (such a s the Icegear and Yonac synths) work as well. Others (such as Model D and Mood) not.

What is going on here? Can anyone else confirm what I’m seeing?

I’ll do up a proper bug report direct to Wave Machine labs, but first want to make sure it’s not just something I’m doing wrong.

@wim I’m seeing the same behavior, but only with Ruismaker, Ruismaker FM, Roli Noise AUs. I haven’t tried everything, but most of the others I have, seem to work as expected, except for the 3 noted.

Thanks for confirming. I guess I’ll go ahead with reporting this fully. Bleh.

I’ve got a fairly long list of synths that don’t work. Several do. I don’t see any commonality yet that would point to what the issue could be. I’m amazed that this could get out of beta testing in this shape. Oh well.

Which are some of the others that don’t work? I only tried about a dozen or so.

I’m also having a problem with AU windows that won’t close by the X. Several tries and then randomly I can close them.

I don't think there are many testers that actually use plugins like Rozetta (I don't for example), so that's why a lot of this stuff of slipping through. You should contract Rim and ask to join the beta.

Yeah, I guess I should. Ugh. Too much like my day job, but I’ve no right to complain if I’m not willing to be part of the solution. To be honest, I’m kind of embarrassed for WaveMachine Labs. This AU midi thing has been so botched so many times for so long, it really hurts the brand. I love Auria Pro otherwise, though and respect it as a huge achievement on iOS.

OK, I’ll stop whining now. :|

  • @WaveMachineLabs : please take a look at the several messages above. There seem to be some AU MIDI issues still to be ironed out.

Yes had that close problem with Fugue Machine.

Several devs have said that AU MIDI is completely undocumented by Apple, so basically it's a guessing game, it's not surprising it's hard to get it right.

If there beta testers, don't use a lot of AU Midi apps, they probably just didn't get much coverage.

A lot of times beta test pools became stale without a dev realizing it...and so they end up with beta testers that are used to a particular workflow and who may not be interested in pushing at newer features like AU. I've managed beta test programs where our beta pool stopped being useful and it took a while to realize we weren't getting much coverage of newer features.

Some devs cast wide nets and send beta invites to basically anyone that reports a bug.

I think @WaveMachineLabs would do well to get a bunch more beta testers from here (AB forum), particularly AU MIDI afficionados.

Here’s where I’ve not been able to get things working. Could be user error, but if it is, I can’t spot what I’m doing wrong. I’ve only tested using Ruismaker XOX sending notes each app. All the rest I own work.

    • Brambos Ruismaker
    • Brambos Ruismaker FM
    • Brambos Ruismaker Noir
    • ElliotGarage EGDR606
    • ElliotGarage EGDR808
    • ElliotGarage EGDR909
    • ElliotGarage EGLM1
    • Kiera Q Tech KQ Dixie
    • KFTE GeoShred (could be user error)
    • Moog Model 15
    • Moog Model D
    • ROLI Noise Drum
    • ROLI Noise Melody
    • UVI Beathawk
    • Virsyn AudioLayer

Interestingly, Brambos Phasemaker and Troublemaker work, as does ElliotGarage EGSY01, just not the drum apps.

  • I reeeeaaally want to love Auria Pro, but I spend sooooo much time troubleshooting it almost every time and and end up distracted from the music I try to make with it. Aside from things not working, I’ve had crashes with the latest update and a project that won’t reopen. I tried using ScaleBud with it. It worked until I actually started recording and it crashed and now the project won’t reopen. I’m on an older iPad Air2 but I only had one track in the project.

Another issue I’m having is when I just scratched it and started a new project, I laid down two tracks using the onscreen keyboard , when I play the second one I’m hearing the first one thru the aux reverb I have on it. When I laid a third and used the drum pads to lay drums I’m hearing the first two. I thought it might have been because of the onscreen keyboard but I tried it with a midi keyboard thru my Apogee Duet. I guess I’ll, have to assign each track to a different midi channel, and have to change the midi channel on the midi controller every time I want to play a different instrument, but I’ll probably just stick to using Auria for mixing projects here and there. 🤷🏽‍♂️

  • I’m confident WaveMachine Labs will get these things ironed out. They just need some people to do more comprehensive testing and detailed bug reporting.

Working in what way? The apps themselves (other than AudioLayer) work fine, I’m just not able to drive them from the only midi AU app I tested - Rozeta XOX. I’ve not had the time to try other midi AU apps sending midi to them. But I will.
